ABOUT AIKIDO

Aikido is a relatively modern, pure Japanese martial art with a strong focus on uniting people in peaceful and harmonious manner rather than promoting direct conflict.
The structure of Aikido utilises the use of throws, locks, take-downs and evasion, with the intention of using the attackers own energy and balance to neutralise any attacks. This unique approach means that Aikido is equally applicable and effective irrespective of age, physical size or fitness level,
For Aikido to be available for everyone the martial aspect have been adapted over the years to allow safe, harmonious practice, but the underlying principles within the techniques practised are still fully martial in their application.
In Aikido, as in no other martial art, when people practice together, the outcome of their actions is greater than the sum of them. Like anything this philosophy can take time to accept, understand and apply, but over time this can be extremely fulfilling in Aikido,
and in life, in general.

Morihei Ueshiba

The son of a landowner from Tanabe, Ueshiba studied a number of martial arts in his youth, and served in the Japanese Army during the Russo-Japanese War. After being discharged in 1907, he moved to Hokkaidō as the head of a pioneer settlement; here he met and studied with Takeda Sōkaku, the founder of Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu. On leaving Hokkaido in 1919, Ueshiba joined the Ōmoto-kyō movement, a Shinto sect, in Ayabe, where he served as a martial arts instructor and opened his first dojo.

Ueshiba moved to Tokyo in 1926, where he set up the Aikikai Hombu Dojo.

“A true warrior is always armed with three things: the radiant sword of pacification; the mirror of bravery, wisdom, and friendship; and the precious jewel of enlightenment.”

— Morihei Ueshiba

“Cast off limiting thoughts and return to true emptiness. Stand in the midst of the great void. This is the secret of the way of the warrior.”

— Morihei Ueshiba
